A former runway and editorial hairstylist, had a knack for creating bold, architectural hair statements. From avant-garde, structural updos to razor-sharp bobs, her work was a favorite among high-fashion photographers and designers who appreciated her understanding of hair as a form of wearable art. However, she grew weary of the restrictive nature of the fashion world and the limited options available to women of color who wanted to experiment with similar high-concept looks. She saw a gap between the creative edge of high fashion and the accessibility of quality hair for Black women who desired that same level of luxury and versatility. She was my Grandmother.
Walcott Living Beauty: A sharp and savvy businesswoman, She started her career in luxury brand management. She developed a keen eye for quality, a deep understanding of consumer psychology, and a passion for creating high-end experiences. But like many Black women, she was frustrated by the beauty supply store experience—poorly sourced hair, mismatched textures, and a lack of authentic connection to her community. She believed that luxury hair should not be a compromise, but an empowering and seamless extension of a woman's style; and she was my Mom.
The Genesis of Walcott Living Beauty:
Brought together by a shared frustration with the limited, uninspired hair options available for editorial shoots, and a desire to create a luxury brand that truly honored Black women's beauty. They discovered a mutual passion for pushing boundaries and a shared belief that high-end, edgy style should be accessible to all women, not just those on a runway.
They spent months researching and traveling the globe, not just for the best hair, but for the most ethical and sustainable sourcing partners. They were determined to build a company that was transparent and deeply rooted in integrity. They didn't want to just sell a product; they wanted to provide an experience, an identity.
The name Walcott Living Beauty was born from this vision. The "Living" represents the sharp, confident, and edgy fashion sense they aimed to capture, while "Beauty" speaks to the foundation of their luxury hair.

The Walcott Living Beauty family are purist, curators of quality in an industry that often prioritized flash over substance. We launched this company, Walcott Living Beauty, with a simple, yet ambitious, mission: to create hair and beauty products that were not only effective but also ethically and sustainably sourced. But to build this empire of integrity, We started like all the others—ordering from a faceless catalogue of global suppliers. The promises were the same: "100% human hair, best quality," all at an unbeatable price. But the reality was tangled, thin, and brittle, processed to the point of lifelessness. We saw our vision fading with every shipment of substandard product. We refused to build our company on a foundation of compromise. Our customers deserved better. This dissatisfaction sparked a personal odyssey
we had to leave the sleek, modern labs and travel to the ends of the Earth, seeking out the perfect ingredients and the people who harvested them.
The first journey led us to the a small village nestled in the mountains of southern India, a region historically known for its hair. Here, we learned the ancient practice of tonsuring, a ritual of spiritual sacrifice performed in temples. The hair was not cut for profit but was a sacred offering, a gift of deep reverence. We witnessed the care with which the tonsured hair was collected, kept intact and unprocessed. We negotiated not with a company, but with the temple trust, establishing a relationship built on mutual respect. This was the first time we saw hair as a story, not just a commodity.
From India, our journey led us to the bustling markets of Vietnam, where the hair trade thrived. In a small market alley, we met a hair collector named Kim. Kim had a special technique for cutting hair to keep the locks the same length, a skill passed down through generations. He shared stories of sourcing hair from village women, many of whom sold their hair to support their families. We saw an opportunity to create a partnership that went beyond the transaction. We worked with Kim to ensure the collectors received a fair, transparent wage, helping to empower the women who contributed to our trade. This hair, stronger and thicker than the temple hair, added a new texture to our collection.
No journey is without its trials. In some regions, We confronted vendors who would cut corners, mixing processed hair with raw strands and hoping we wouldn’t notice. It was in these moments that our commitment to quality was tested. We relied on our keen eye and the meticulous testing protocols we have developed, rejecting shipments that did not meet our rigorous standards. We were forced to walk away from deals that would have been lucrative but compromised our principles.
The most challenging leg of the journey took us to a region plagued by conflict, where we discovered that some hair was being harvested unethically. This was our moral crucible. The hair was of stunning quality, but the circumstances of its collection were unacceptable. We made the difficult decision to refuse this source entirely, even though it meant more effort to find a different supply. This experience strengthened our resolve to build a business that was not only profitable, but also ethical.
Our final destination was a secluded village in rural Russia, where the cold climate and careful diet of the villagers created hair of incredible shine and strength. The women here, known for their long, beautiful tresses, saw selling their hair as a form of financial security. We connected with a local cooperative that ensured fair prices and worked with them to process the hair gently, preserving its natural integrity.
After a year of relentless travel, We returned home. Our company, Walcott Living Beauty, was no longer a business that simply sold products. It was a brand with a story, each bundle of hair a testament to a different culture and a respectful journey. We use the stories of Kim, the temples, and the Russian cooperative in our marketing, detailing the origin and ethical journey of each strand.
